The front of house mixing engineer was asleep!

The Grove is a venue that I like, and I have attended several other shows there. The drum levels were not proper on last night's show, and the mixing was awful! The cymbals and ride were ultra prominent, the hats were buried to non-existent, the snare sounded harsh, and the kicks weren't very present. The vocals were the biggest problem, with the EQ way off and sounding tinny, making the words not distinguishable for at least 75% of the show. I have a bit of a background in studio recording and live mixing, so I don't want to think my ear is perfect, but I can do alright, to say the least. I asked my GF and some around us what they thought of the sound, and they also found it to be harsh and unwelcoming. The mixing an empty house is to create a working mix of the space, and once it's full of bodies, the physics change, thus two maybe three songs at the beginning will sound a bit thin etc. This entire set was terribly mixed. Oddly, I recorded a few songs on my iPhone, and they came out better than the actual sound in the room.
